Sometimes you encounter situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but burst out chuckling. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer extent of unadulterated absurdity and just throws its hands up, opting for laughter as a coping defense.
But then, you realize that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain bad. And the laughter you felt morphs into a groan.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of bewilderment. You wonder about the nature of it all. Was this a joke?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?
A Disaster of Epic Proportions
The earthquake struck with devastating force, consuming entire villages in its path. Buildings crumbled like fragile toys, and the roar that ensued was deafening. Awful Day Ever

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
